Gunbalanya Market Garden Open Day – from RIG News#14
Stone Country Festival & Gunbalanya Market Garden Open Day
Story from Alex Debono, Community Development Officer, Market Gardens, West Arnhem Shire Council
On Saturday 27 August Gunbalanya community had their annual Stone Country Festival and Open Day. The CDEP Market Garden team took the opportunity to invite gardeners from other communities as well as Darwin based community gardeners to come and have at look at their market garden and share a meal made from garden produce.
The nursery and garden staff from Maningrida and the ladies and kids from Bagot community’s garden and nutrition project took up the offer and came along on the day. The kids from Bagot had a ball harvesting sweet potato, watermelon and passionfruit. Everyone pitched in to cook a veggie stew and meat from Gunbalanya meat works.
The Maningrida ladies helped to prepare some bush tucker with up a couple of magpie geese and ducks cooked on the coals.
It was a great chance to catch up with other gardeners in a garden setting. Everyone was particularly impressed by the stunning scenery at our garden gate. Many Darwin and Jabiru based gardeners and visitors to the Stone Country Festival also joined us on the day and we shared garden stories and cuttings.
Thanks to everyone for coming on the day and if any other gardeners from other communities would like to visit our garden or invite us to their garden please get in contact with Alex 0427 003 348.
